  • Welcome Back - Autumn Term 2021

Sun 05 Sep 2021 Justine Proctor

Welcome back to school - I hope you all had a happy summer holiday. I am looking forward to seeing you all again, and to welcoming our new Nursery and Reception children and parents to the school.

At Tredegarville, we have all been working hard to get school ready and to make sure it is as safe as it can be. Many of the Covid measures that were in place before the summer break will be continuing this term. Staff will continue to wear masks around the school. Children will remain in consistent class groups and, to avoid lots of mixing, we will continue to have the same break and lunchtime arrangements. To keep everyone safe, children will still need to come through the gate without their parents/ carers  each morning. Parents are still asked to wear a mask at the school gate (unless you are medically exempt). The gates will be open from 8.45 and school will start at 8.55. Please leave the area as soon as your children have gone through the gate to avoid crowding outside the school. At the end of the day we will dismiss one class at a time from the school gate. Please be patient as this will take a little time. We plan to send Reception, Year 3 and Year 5  out first; then Year 1, Year 4 and Year 6, and then Year 2. You may want to arrive at the gate a little earlier if your child is in one of the first classes, and just a little later for the later classes.

    Please help us by:

    • Not sending children into school if they have any symptoms of covid. Please arrange for a test and keep them home until you have the results
    • Not coming to the school gate if you yourself have any symptoms
    • wearing a mask when dropping off and collecting children
    • Letting us know if anyone in your household has tested positive.

We will keep you informed if we have any cases in school and will advise you about what you may need to do.

We will be offering all children breakfast (toast) every day in class. We will not yet be opening the early morning breakfast club as we will be trying to keep children in their class groups and not mixing across the school. I know many of you will be keen for the mixed Breakfast Club to re-start and we will review this situation by the end of the half-term. In the meantime, I know you will continue to work together with us to keep everyone safe and learning in school.

I will be on the gate every morning, along with Miss Bethan Nicholls if you need to ask any questions;  if you prefer, please telephone the school (02920 483680) to speka to the secretary (Mrs Catherine Chambers) or me,  or email me (justine.proctor2@cardiff.gov.uk).

I will be your temporary Headteacher for the first half-term as  Mrs Emma Laing has now moved to her new school. Mrs Victoria Constantinou is very excited to be taking over as Headteacher in November; she will be coming in to school during the half-term in order to meet the children, parents and staff, and to get to know the school well before she takes up her post.

    With best wishes,

    Justine Proctor

    Acting Headteacher

  • Changes to start of year in January 2020

Fri 18 Dec 2020 Emma Laing

    18th December 2020

    Dear Parent/Carer,

I have been informed today of some changes to the start of the school year in January. For the first week back (starting 4th January) all learning will now be online. Children must access their learning online every day. It is very important that all children can access the internet and have a device to do their work. We know that most children will not have their own computer and will be sharing one and that’s fine. Please let us know if you do have any IT problems.

Some children who need additional support and the children of critical keyworkers will attend school from Wednesday 6th January. If your child has been in school this week, they can attend that week. If you are a critical keyworker and need your child to attend from the Wednesday for childcare, please email Mrs Laing as soon as possible. Children must be booked in for this in advance.

All children should return to full school from Monday 11th January.

I am sorry for all the changes. We are all responding to a difficult and fast changing situation but I wanted to give you maximum notice of these changes. If there are any further changes over the holidays I will let you know.

Please can I remind you that it is VERY IMPORTANT that you let school know if your child tests positive at any point over the holidays.  You can contact me by email: elaing@cardiff.gov.uk or by replying to the text messages you get from school.

School officially ends today and children can take a break from their online learning! Thank you so much for your support this term. I wish you all a safe and happy Christmas and a restful break.

    Sending you best wishes,

  • Update letter on school re-opening 12th June

    Fri 19 Jun 2020

    Tredegarville CW Primary School

    Dear Parents,

    Update 12th June 2020

Many of you will have seen on the news in the past week that schools will start to re-open from June 29th. The summer term will be extended and will now finish for the summer holidays on July 24th. This will give children four weeks back in school.

We are busy making plans to re-open school to ensure it is a safe and welcoming place for your children. I thought you might like an update on our preparations this week. This week the council health and safety officer visited to start checking the site. He had over 100 questions for me about how the site will be managed. I can assure you it is very thorough!! Teachers will be coming in over the next few weeks to rearrange classrooms and to move things around a bit. We have also been busy ordering supplies that we will need when we come back. The council will be providing us with specialist cleaning equipment and staff will have training how to use this.

At the moment, we are still finalising all the plans and working out the groups for children to attend. I have had quite a few questions from parents. Here are some questions that have been asked so far:

Why can my child only attend one day a week?

The best way to keep everyone safe is for children to attend in a small group. We can only do this if children come to school less often. It means that children will only interact with the children in their small group and we can clean everything very carefully before the next group come in.

Will all my children attend school on the same day?

    Yes that is our plan!

Will all children start on Monday 29th June?

No we will start with three classes to get them used to the new arrangements and then add more classes in.

Can we choose which day to attend?

No. We can’t mix the groups of children up. They will be allocated to a colour group and attend on their set day.

Can they come with their friends?

It is very difficult planning all the groups to make sure brothers and sisters in different classes can attend on the same day. We will just tell you which groups they are in. There will be 8 in a group from the same class so they will have some friends in their group!

Will we bring the children to school in the normal way?

The classes will arrive and leave at different times to make sure we can all keep apart. Mrs Laing and Miss Proctor will be on the gate to guide you as normal. We will use additional gates so that one group will go through the gate at a time. The teacher will collect them and they will go straight into school. Parents will not come onto the playground. It will be important to arrive and collect at the set times.

    Will children wear school uniform?

Yes but don’t buy new uniform if they have grown out of their old uniform.

I am a keyworker and I will need childcare. What shall I do?

If you applied for childcare in the hub school your child can transfer for childcare in our school. Keyworker children will be able to have childcare provision in school all the days you are working. If you did not apply for childcare but will now need it you will have to apply directly to the council. We are only allowed to take children who have been allocated  a place by the council. Please follow this link for council information: www.cardiff.gov.uk/keyworkerchildcare

    What about school dinners?

There will be no cooked dinners in school at the moment. Children will need to bring a packed lunch and a water bottle in each day. The children will eat their lunch in the classroom with their teachers as we will not be bringing groups of children together in the hall.

What should my child bring to school?

Just themselves, a coat, a lunchbox and water bottle. They will not be able to bring any bags, pencil cases or PE kits into school.

What will they do in school?

They will have a chance to see their teacher again. They will play with a small group of friends. They will have lots of time outdoors to play. They will look at some of their learning and their teacher will help explain the work they will need to do at home for the rest of the week. They will have lots of fun!

What shall I do if my child is too scared to come back to school?

These check in sessions before the end of term are a good way for them to some and see what it is like and to meet their friends. They will also get used to the new way in schools will work. We will be there to reassure them.

How long will school be like this?

I don’t know! I think we will be doing a mixture of school based learning and learning on line for a while yet. The government has asked us to open now to get ready for this.

    Is it safe?

We are working very hard to make it as safe as we possibly can. The small groups help with this but there will also be lots of hand washing and a lot of additional cleaning. We will be sharing all our safety plans with you. We are receiving lots of advice and support from health and safety specialists

I will write again with another update and we will be in touch with you about your child’s group and start date as soon as we can.

Don’t forget to get in touch if you have more questions! Please do email me: elaing@cardiff.gov.uk

    Sending you best wishes,

    Mrs Laing

  • Letter about the re-opening of school from June 29th

    Fri 19 Jun 2020

    Tredegarville CW Primary School

    Dear Parents,

Many of you will have seen on the news in the past week that schools will start to re-open from June 29th. The summer term will be extended and will now finish for the summer holidays on July 24th. This will give children four weeks back in school.

We are busy making plans to re-open school to ensure it is a safe and welcoming place for your children. We are waiting for some more detailed guidance from Welsh Government and will then share all these plans with you. It is clear that school will not look the same as it looked before. We expect that children will attend with the same small group of children, with groups no more than ten children. Children will arrive at school and be collected at different times to reduce the number of people around the gate. Children will be in their small groups with their teacher and a teaching assistant for the day and will not mix with other groups. They will bring their own lunches and will eat with their teachers. There will be lots of time for them to play and learn with others in their group and lots of time outdoors in their group! Although school will look different, please reassure your child that the staff still love them and care for them in the exactly the same way as before and still want them to love learning and enjoy school. There will be lots of fun!

In order to keep groups of children small we think children will attend school one day a week and then access the rest of their learning online. This may not sound like much time in school but with small groups of children, we think children will get lots of learning done and coming into school will really help them with their online learning. Teachers will continue to upload online learning for children when they are not in school. Hopefully, we have now managed to support most families with internet and IT access and you are all able to do online learning at home. Children will also be able to access books, paper, pens and toys in school, which they may not have been able to access at home.

I fully understand that many of you will feel anxious about children returning to school. I want to reassure you that we will be doing everything we possibly can to make it safe for all of us. As well as only having small groups of children there will be enhanced cleaning regimes, very regular hand washing and some social distancing measures in place. We do not think it is realistic to keep very small children apart so they will play with carefully selected and very regularly cleaned resources and play outside as much as possible. All children will only be with a small group of other children. We will not be having classes together in corridors, the dining hall or main hall. In classrooms we will have far fewer tables to allow for more space between children.

Over the coming weeks we will be sharing all our plans with you as we know how important it is that you feel it is safe for children to return. Coming back to school will help children with their learning but we also know how important it is for them to spend time and  play with other children. School is likely to look very different for quite a while and we want to prepare children for this and get them ready for a different type of school in September. All the staff in school has missed you and your children a great deal and we are really looking forward to seeing you.

Please check the website regularly for updates and we will be in touch with you about which groups are starting on what date. Remember, if you have any questions or would like to contact me, my email address is: elaing@cardiff.gov.uk.

    Sending you best wishes,

    Mrs Laing

  • Free School Meal Vouchers

    Fri 03 Apr 2020

    Dear Parents and Carers,

The council have now stopped the collection of packed lunch grab bags from schools. The Welsh Government are going to continue to provide support for families eligible for free school meals over the Easter break. Over the next few days, if you have a child eligible for a free school meal, you will receive a letter explaining how you can get a voucher for food to the value of £40 as a contribution towards your food costs over the two week Easter break.

There is a telephone number on the letter you can call for help. If you email me (elaing@Cardiff.gov.uk) I can phone you back and help too. I will let you know when I can be in school next week to help you with the vouchers as well.

We are here for you and if you need anything, please do contact us.

  • Information about childcare for essential workers

    Sun 22 Mar 2020

    Dear Parents/Carers,
School is now closed to pupils. However from March 23rd schools will be used to provide childcare for essential workers. The point of closing schools is to minimise social contact and reduce the risk of virus spread.

If at all possible keep your child at home. When arranging childcare please remember children should not be left with grandparents or relatives that are over 70 or who have any underlying health problems. Children should not be left home alone.

The government has said schools will provide childcare for essential workers. There is a full list of essential workers on government websites.

Cardiff has said that schools need to take children of parents who work in health and social care and the emergency services in the first instance. If you fall into any other worker category from the list we will collect your information for now and be in touch at a later point with details.

For the first week childcare will take place in our school and only children who have registered for this may turn up. After this week hubs will be created so all the children in a given area will go to one school.

If you have any alternative childcare or children could stay with a parent who is not an essential worker then this is what should happen. Please only take children into schools if you really need to.

Many parents contacted us on Friday. If you still want to request childcare, please call the school on Monday morning.

    Many thanks

    Emma Laing
